What goes on from initial consult to actual procedure?

Patch Testing at least 2 Days Before:

  • Before the SMP procedure, a patch test is conducted at least two days in advance to ensure there are no allergic reactions or adverse effects to the pigment. A small amount of pigment is applied to a discreet area of the scalp, and the patient is monitored for any signs of irritation or sensitivity.

Procedure Day:

  • Attire: Patients are advised to wear a black shirt on the day of the procedure to minimize the visibility of any pigment residue.
  • Hair Dye Color Selection: During the pre-procedure consultation, the patient selects the hair dye color that best matches their natural hair color or desired look.
  • Scalp Cleaning: The scalp is thoroughly cleaned with chlorhexidine or another antiseptic solution to remove oils, dirt, and bacteria before the SMP procedure begins.
  • Demarcation and SMP Procedure: The areas to be treated are demarcated to outline the desired hairline and pigment application areas. Using specialized SMP equipment, tiny pigment deposits are strategically implanted into the scalp to simulate natural hair follicles. This process is repeated across the entire treatment area, ensuring consistent coverage and a natural-looking result.
  • In Terra we use an AI assisted device to ensure even depth to prevent blotching and running of ink colour, which may lead to unnatural looking hair colour
  • Overlapping of SMP areas: To achieve optimal coverage and color consistency, areas of pigment overlap are created during the SMP procedure. This involves applying the pigment to each area at least twice, ensuring thorough saturation and blending.

Who is suitable for SMP?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is suitable for individuals experiencing various degrees of hair loss, those seeking to camouflage previous surgical or accident scars or achieve a denser-looking scalp. It is suitable for both men and women of all ages and hair types.

However SMP is not suitable for individuals with known ink allergies or patients who are on blood thinners

How long before I see results?

Results from SMP can typically be seen immediately following the procedure. However, the full effect may take a week to fully manifest as the scalp heals and the pigmentation settles. Some minor fading may occur during the initial healing period, but the final results are generally visible within a month.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation safe?

Yes, SMP is a safe and minimally invasive procedure when performed by qualified and experienced professionals. The pigments used in SMP are hypoallergenic and non-toxic, and strict hygiene protocols are followed to ensure patient safety and minimise the risk of complications. However as with all procedures, there is still documented risk of ink allergies, bleeding and infection.
