Male Pattern Baldness

In Singapore, male hair loss is a prevalent issue, with statistics indicating that around 70% of men are likely to experience some form of hair loss during their lifetime. The most common cause of hair loss among Singaporean men is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern hair loss (MPHL) or male pattern baldness (MPB). This condition is characterized by a specific pattern of hair thinning and loss, typically starting with a receding hairline or thinning crown.

The development of androgenetic alopecia in Singaporean men is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormonal imbalances, and environmental factors. Family history plays a significant role, as individuals with a family history of male pattern hair loss are more likely to experience it themselves. Hormonal factors, particularly the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), contribute to the shrinking of hair follicles in genetically susceptible individuals.

Female Pattern Baldness

Hair loss in women in Singapore is influenced by a multitude of factors, including internal stressors like hormonal changes and external stressors such as environmental conditions and hair care practices. These factors can have varying durations and intensities, contributing to the complexity of hair loss experiences among women. Two common conditions, Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) and Telogen Effluvium, highlight this complexity.

FPHL is characterized by gradual hair thinning due to genetic factors, while Telogen Effluvium involves temporary hair shedding triggered by significant stressors. These conditions can intersect, leading to a simultaneous experience of genetic and stress-related hair loss in some individuals.
